These noodles have bagged the runner up spot on the Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles list of 2020. That’s a bit like winning an instant noodle Oscar, but possibly through a more transparent voting process. Here’s what I thought of the noodles.
Brand: Red Chef
Name: Spicy Sakura Prawn Soup Noodles
Noodle: 3.5 out of 5
The pack came with a generous portion of yellow noodles and bihun noodles (there’s a variation with just the yellow noodles). Nothing to complain about here – these are the run-of-the-mill noodles you’d get in hawker stalls.
Garnishings: 2 out of 5
For the price (I got this one for around RM6, then later realized there were also packs of four selling at RM10 online and in Jaya Grocer), I was hoping for little slivers of dehydrated prawn, but there wasn’t any. You get a nice little serving of fried shallots though.
Spiciness: 3 out of 5
A good amount of spicy, but it doesn’t overpower the flavour.
Flavour: 4.5 out of 5
This is as close to the genuine thing as you can get. There’s a noticeable prawn flavour. The soup is a rich, sweet and savory blend that you’ll inhale long before you taste it. It’s not quite as good as good hawker stall prawn noodles, but it’s a decent substitute for those late night hunger pangs or lazy Sunday afternoons.
Overall: 4 out of 5
I loved this one – it’s one of the best I’ve had. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have been able to tell that these were instant if you had served it to me at a hawker stall. If you like prawn noodles, do yourself a favour and stock your pantry with these.
